Australian telco deploying webphone kiosks to replace payphones

August 11, 2011

According to the International Business Times, Australian telco Telstra will be deploying Internet kiosk webphones to replace payphones.

Calling them the "21st century upgrade for the payphone," the new Telstra kiosks will enable consumers browse or pay bills online, as well as making phone calls.

The move comes after a successful pilot of the internet kiosks in which 50 touchscreen kiosks were deployed in Australian airports and were deemed a success with users.

The company has yet to release information on the size or location of future deployments of the Internet webphone kiosks.
