AUSTIN, Texas -- Applied Science Fiction Inc.'s Digital PIC kiosk, which uses a digital dry film processing system, has been named "Best of What's New" in the photo category of Popular Science magazine's annual ranking of best innovations.
The magazine included 100 winners in 10 categories in its December issue. To win, a product or technology must represent a significant step forward in its category, according to an ASF news release.
ASF first tested the Digital PIC kiosk this summer at Precision Camera & Video in Austin, Texas. The system is currently being tested at Camera Land in New York City, Keeble & Shuchat in Palo Alto, Calif., Karstadt-Foto Quelle in Munich, Germany, and seven Boston-area CVS pharmacy locations.
The company expects to begin full production in early 2003. Similar kiosks already on the market make prints from digital cameras, but this is the first to work for both digital images and film, according to ASF. Working from a touchscreen, users can rotate, zoom, crop, adjust brightness or contrast and remove red eye.
