Another c-store uses Radiant kiosks for food orders

March 31, 2003

ATLANTA -- Convenience store chain Wawa, Inc., is using Radiant Systems' (Nasdaq:RADS). Customer Self-Service (CSS) kiosks at more than 500 of its stores throughout Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

According to a news release, each store processes hundreds of customer orders a day for Wawa's built-to-order hoagies, salads and other specialty food items at the kiosks.

Up to six Radiant CSS kiosks are installed at each site. Radiant CSS presents new products to customers on an initial screen. The kiosk also suggests a variety of up-sell and cross-sell opportunities that complement the customers' initial orders. For example, customers ordering sandwiches are asked if they would like to add bacon to the sandwich or add a bag of chips, a beverage or another item to their order.

The Radiant Food Production System receives orders from the kiosks and guides the Wawa staff in preparation. During the wait for an order to be completed, customers are free to shop in the store and pay for their order as well as other items.

"Radiant CSS has enabled Wawa to serve more customers, serve them faster and consistently get their orders correct," said John Cunningham, Wawa's director of store operations technology, in the release.  "The system never forgets the up-sell, cross-sell or special offer."

According to the release, 90 percent of kiosk users surveyed by Wawa felt they were served and out of the store faster. In addition, the stores save labor hours because there is no longer a need for a dedicated order taker.

Radiant recently announced that similar kiosks have been deployed at Sheetz convenience/petroleum stores, where they are used to allow customers to create made-to-order sandwiches while they are fueling their vehicles. (See related story Radiant kiosk helps customers get fed while they fuel)
