Aldi has removed self-checkout lanes at several stores in Montgomery County in Maryland, including locations in Germantown and Montgomery Village, as part of a broader review of its in-store technology, according to a report by The Mocoshow.
Customers nationwide have reported similar changes over the past two months. In a statement to Supermarket News, an Aldi representative said the company "has adjusted checkout formats in select locations to ensure we're offering the best shopping experience possible while delivering exceptional value."
A spokesperson also told the news outlet that Aldi continues to "test and refine our in-store technologies and checkout options to better address customer needs and enhance operational efficiency." The company noted that self-checkout will remain available at many stores.
Aldi has not said how many Maryland locations are affected or whether more stores will phase out self-checkout in the future.
