Discount supermarket chain Aldi has reopened its newly refurbished "Shop & Go" store in Greenwich, London, featuring self-checkout lanes and an updated payment process.
The changes aim to streamline the shopping experience for customers, according to a Retail Gazette report.
The store utilizes AI cameras to track items selected by shoppers, automatically calculating the total bill. Customers now have the option to use self-checkouts or pay at a new "fast lane" upon exiting. The store's layout eliminates the previous requirement of scanning a QR code or tapping a payment card at the entrance turnstile.
However, the store will continue a pre-authorization charge for those using the fast lane exit, with a minimum charge of approximately $13.49. Previously, this charge was taken from customers entering the store. Any amount spent under the minimum is refunded, though the article notes this refund can take up to a week to process. Aldi has not commented on the updated system.
