As part of its Operational Fitness Program, the U.S. Air Force is installing "Fitness on Request" kiosks at 66 locations by the end of September, Air Force Personnel Center officials said in a news release.
Anthony Alcala, fitness program specialist, said that with many Air Force fitness facilities losing all or part of their local group exercise instructor funding, use of the kiosks will help supplement or replace the group exercise programming.
"We want to provide customers an alternative at bases that lost these funds to ensure fitness and sports centers continue to provide a variety of programs," he said.
The fitness kiosks come preloaded with 30 exercise training videos, which feature a virtual instructor and two assistants who perform the exercise routines at different skill levels.
Large overhead screens display the instructional videos and allow for group exercise, with all airmen — including retirees and family members — having access to the kiosks at various base fitness centers.
"The goal of this program is to encourage airmen to live healthy lifestyles and provide alternative avenues to staying fit," said Scott Nunnelly, the AFPC fitness program manager, in the news release. "The 'Fitness on Request' kiosks allow many individuals to come together and participate in group exercise without the need of a live instructor."
