3M reveals new line of passport readers

January 15, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. — 3M, a leading provider of travel and identity document readers for the kiosk marketplace, will use Check-In '08 to showcase its latest generation of passport scanners for kiosks, 3M Kiosk Full Page Readers and 3M Kiosk ePassport Readers.

The kiosk readers, are designed specifically for integration into Common Use Self-Service kiosks and automated gates, are used to facilitate the check-in process for airlines, hotels and car rental agencies, as well as to automate identity processing for frequent travelers and at automated border control points.

The size reduction of the new model is especially important for the latest designs of counter-top kiosks. The easy-to-use, ergonomic kiosk readers help shorten the queues for travelers around the world and help increase border control efficiency without compromising security. Product capabilities support the reading of both passports and ID cards, and include rapid full-page image capture, machine-readable zone data extraction, barcode reading and automatic e-Passport reading, regardless of chip location in the document. Numerous mounting points allow for easy integration and installation of the readers into kiosks. "The latest kiosk readers from 3M provide customers with value-added options, allowing them to customize solutions to meet their business needs, while helping to provide a faster and more pleasant security experience for travelers," said Rich Sanders, business manager for 3M Security Systems. "To meet customer needs, 3M provides a variety of software and hardware solutions to accompany the kiosk readers. We're able to maintain a competitive sell price while increasing product functionality." 3M brings more than 30 years of experience, a global presence, technical innovation and a strong customer focus to the secure document marketplace. 3M solutions cover a broad spectrum of enhanced travel and border security, including document issuance and border management.
