Why your kiosk transactions are failing

September 30, 2011 by Stephen Enfield — CEO, POS Supply

Did you know that contamination from dirt, oil and debris could be the cause of your failed transactions? At first these contaminants cause intermittent read errors, but over time they will get gradually worse. In order to keep your kiosk running smoothly, cleaning your kiosk should be part of a preventative maintenance plan, which will:

  • Prolong equipment life and reduce capital expenditures.
  • Reduce maintenance fees.
  • Reduce equipment downtime.
  • Reduce fees from erroneous transactions.
  • Increase customer loyalty with fast efficient transactions.

The following components on a kiosk can benefit from regular cleaning:

Card readers: Inserted like any credit card, a card reader cleaning card will quickly and easily remove contaminates that cause errors during a debit or credit payment transaction. The card reader cleaning card is designed to clean the magstripe reader.

Bill acceptors: Bill acceptor cleaning cards will help to maintain the acceptance rate and prevent jamming of the currency during the validation process by cleaning the optical lens and other critical parts of the bill acceptor.

Thermal printers: The use of a printer cleaning card or a cleaning swab can help prolong the life of the thermal print head by removing built on contaminants on the print head and other critical components.

Touchscreens / monitors: Utilizing screen wipes will allow you to gently wipe off the dirt on the screen and the perimeter of the touchscreen or monitor.

Keyboards: A key cleaning swab cleans debris from the keys surface, between the keys and around the keys. There's also snap swabs with alcohol-filled reservoir handles that can used to clean the keys.

Scanners: As it transports through the check scanner's paper path, a check scanner cleaning card will clean the sensitive magnetic heads, lens and transport rollers without having to dismantle the equipment.

It is critical that these contaminants are regularly removed to help avoid these errors. With the use of these simple products, you can keep your kiosks running smoothly and in turn keep your customers happy.
