Describe your current role.
The owner of BetterHealth Vending and Daedalus Distribution, LLC both based out of Charleston, South Carolina. BetterHealth Vending is a healthy vending business opportunity and Daedalus Distribution is the importer, service and parts center for Vendekin Technologies secure digital markets into the US.
What was your first-ever career role and what is one important lesson you learned from it?
I spent over 20 years as a police officer and honorably retired as an Assistant Chief of Police. During my career one of the biggest lessons that I learned is that the power of "community" is untapped and underutilized. I believe that we can prove the true power of community by working with each other.
What inspired you to work in your industry?
Like many people, I have been held hostage by outdated, old vending machines that continually victimize consumers without recourse. Vending failures, spoiled products, transaction payment issues etc... are just a few of the reasons that inspired me to get involved in the vending industry. I also saw this opportunity as a vessel that could provide me and my family stable income.
What do you enjoy most about your current role?
Providing amazing food and drinks to areas that would normally be stuck eating bags of chips and soda is very satisfying for us. Additionally, I enjoy working in partnership with Vendekin Technologies as we focus on the consumer experience for vending machines.
What's a common misconception people have about what you do?
One common misconception about us is that we place traditional vending machines into facilities and then load them with health food that tastes horrible. In fact, we bring in state of the art machines and then use software to help incentivize consumers to make healthier decisions while stocking the machines with great tasting products.
What industry trends do you think are currently over-hyped and why?
I might be alone on my hill over here, but I see major flaws and issues with free grab style markets. I understand the reasons why the industry started focusing on market style systems, but think we just needed to evolve the vending machine rather than introduce theft and temperature control issues.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out in your industry?
Unattended retail/vending is an incredible opportunity if you treat it like a business. This is not "passive" income until you can scale to the size where you can hire staff to perform the physical tasks. Stay away from the one to four machine zone and go big if you're going to make this one of your investments.
What do you do to have fun outside of work?
I love doing just about anything with my family and friends. We love road trips to small towns, amusement parks and fun places all across the U.S.
Are you involved in any charitable organizations that you would like to tell people about?
I am the founder and past president of the Goodyear Police Officers Association, Goodyear Police Officers Charitable Foundation and the Kitsap County Sheriff's Benevolent Foundation. My focus was bringing community together with the men and women that serve and protect them.
Where did you grow up and how did your upbringing impact the person you are today?
I was taught to leave things better than I found them. In this case, I am focusing on making vending machines more reliable and fun than those before me.
Is there anything else you would like to tell people about yourself or your company/organization?
BetterHealth Vending is connecting investors with business opportunities to place amazing machines and software into facilities that are filled with hard workers. We are improving the quality of life for employees and investors all while encouraging consumers to make healthier decisions.
