Here are some considerations when choosing a scanner for your kiosk.
January 23, 2024
Choosing the right ID card, driver's license, passport, and document scanners for integration into a kiosk requires careful consideration to ensure optimal functionality and performance. The selection process involves evaluating key factors such as data capture capabilities, accuracy in reading diverse identification documents, adaptability to various document conditions, and overall reliability. As kiosks play a pivotal role in diverse settings, including government offices, transportation hubs, and public spaces, the scanners must meet high standards for security, efficiency, and user experience.
The process is relatively straightforward. First, determine what it is you are going to scan. Next, determine the type of scanning technology you are going to use. And finally, consider maintenance and support.
Depending on the type of identification documents that your customers will be using, you may need to choose a scanner capable of reading either IDs or passports, or both. Do you also need to scan supporting documents? Devices that only scan IDs usually cost less, but if you have customers using passports, then it would be wise to choose a device that reads both IDs and passports. All Plustek SecureScan passport scanners will read both passports and driver's licenses. If you also need to scan supporting documents, look for a device like the Plustek VTM 300 that will scan ID cards and typical business documents.
There are two technologies available for scanning and reading IDs and passports. Mechanical scanners that have been around for years, and newer capture devices that have no moving parts. Mechanical scanners are typically less expensive, but they can be slower and may require more maintenance. Capture devices are faster and more reliable, but they tend to be more expensive. Many mechanical scanners scan both sides of the ID simultaneously, but when using capture devices to read ID, it usually requires flipping the ID during scanning. Weighing the cost and performance considerations will be one factor in deciding which type of scanner is best for your kiosk. Plustek offers both mechanical scanners and capture devices for kiosk use.
Regardless of the type of scanner you choose, it will require some level of maintenance and support to keep it working properly. Consider factors such as the frequency of use, the environment in which the kiosk will be located, and the availability of technical support when deciding on a scanner.
