ThePOLYTOUCH® PASSPORT 32 by Pyramid Computer is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2026, marked here by an interview between content creator Christian Hartmeier and Senior Product Manager Jan Altes.
The terminal originated from a 2014 custom OEM project for a fast-food chain; since that design couldn't join Pyramid's own product line, the company built its own 32-inch kiosk on the same technology, following the earlier CLASSIC 32 (the world's first 32-inch PCAP terminal). Founder Frieder Hansen pushed for a freestanding, highly modular design usable across many industries.
Its flexibility comes from the "Belly" operating console, which houses the PC and peripheral modules (payment systems, printers, scanners, biometric readers, etc.), resulting in several hundred product variants over the years. The terminal was engineered for fast, tool-free, single-technician installation, and its slim, cable-free look was made possible by a custom LVDS connector linking the console-mounted PC to the display.
The core installation principle and modularity have stayed consistent since 2016, while the underlying technology and manufacturing have been modernized, keeping older units retrofittable. The PASSPORT 32 is used across sectors like healthcare, pharmacies, retail, fast food, and lottery outlets (EDEKA, Hesburger, Siemens HiMed, Aversi), and Altes credits it with shaping POLYTOUCH®'s ongoing design philosophy: modular, scalable, in-house-developed, and robust.
