The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has submitted a plan to the federal government to place about 60 electric vehicle charging stations within 50 miles of highways designated as alternative fuel corridors, according to a Wisconsin Public Radio report.

The state plans use close to $79 million in federal funds for the initiative to be received over the next five years as part of a bipartisan infrastructure law.

Wisconsin has about 400 EV charging stations, most of which are publicly available.

Only four of the stations, however, meet the federal government's funding criteria.

The Federal Highway Administration will advise states by the end of the month if the plans have been approved.
