CHARLESTON, W. Va. - Providing services for the needy in Charleston, W.Va., is nothing new for the Schoenbaum Family Enrichment Center. But starting this year, the center has added a new wrinkle - providing technology through a kiosk.
The center, at a cost of $42,000, has added a kiosk to its menu of available items. The kiosk will provide Internet access and a card catalog for the center's library. In addition, users can access scanners, fax machines, and printers using the kiosks.
Center officials said the kiosk will help low-income residents in Charleston improve their reading skills and land a better job.
"We though this was a possible way to do outreach," Linda Wright, center library director, told the Charleston Daily Mail. "It seemed like a really good opportunity to see what we could do with it."
Center officials, which funded the kiosk in part with a $15,000 grant from telecommunications firm Verizon, said it will consider buying a second kiosk if this one proves to be successful.
