War memorial will feature kiosk

March 31, 2002

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The new Alabama Veterans Memorial honors state veterans from all branches of service in 20th century wars, including World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Gulf War.

Scheduled for completion in 2002 is a multimillion-dollar education center with exhibits, a theater and a kiosk that allows veterans to input their own story.

While members of the Alabama Veterans Memorial Foundation have not signed a contract with a specific kiosk manufacturer, they envision a computer-driven, touchscreen kiosk that allows veterans and their families to enter their stories into the kiosk's database using touchscreen prompts or a keyboard to manually enter the information. The kiosk is part of phase two, and would not be installed until Fall 2002, pending fundraising efforts.

Situated in a 22-acre park, the Memorial temple, to be inaugurated May 27, 2001, honors Alabama veterans. A Regiment of Columns honors Alabama's 22 Medal of Honor recipients. The temple contains veterans' stories and 59 pieces of artwork by Alabama artists interpreting peace, war, freedom and democracy.
