Wane County, Wisconsin has launched a composting program that allows residents to drop off food scraps at 24-hour kiosks, according to a report by WMTV15 News. The initiative is a collaboration between Dane County Waste and Renewables and Purple Cow Organics, with a goal of keeping organic material out of landfills while promoting more sustainable waste management practices.
Food scraps that end up in landfills decompose without oxygen and produce methane, a greenhouse gas linked to climate change. According to Dane County officials, composting prevents this process by allowing food waste to break down while exposed to air. Instead of producing harmful emissions, the material becomes a useful soil additive that can support gardens, farms, and landscaping projects across the region.
The system features multiple 24-hour drop-off kiosks in several Wisconsin communities, including Madison, Middleton, Verona, Fitchburg and McFarland. Residents can bring their food scraps to any kiosk. More than 600 people have already registered for the program.
