Students at Virginia Commonwealth University are taking part in a new hands-only CPR training experience inside the VCU Student Commons, thanks to the installation of the state's first Mobile CPR Training Kiosk. According to a report in The Commonwealth Times, the kiosk is designed to teach the basics of CPR in under five minutes.
Sponsored by Genworth and CareScout, the interactive touchscreen kiosk guides users through a short instructional video, followed by a brief practice session and a 30-second test. The system provides real-time feedback on compression depth, hand placement, and overall technique. Students who used the kiosk said it offered a helpful refresher, especially for those whose last formal training took place years earlier.
More than 350,000 people experience cardiac arrest outside of hospitals in the United States each year, and about 90% do not survive. Surveys by the American Red Cross suggest a strong interest in training, with many adults eager to refresh their skills, particularly to protect family members.
The American Heart Association hopes the kiosk will help close knowledge gaps by providing quick, repeated exposure to life-saving skills. The unit will remain in the Student Commons for three months before moving to other sites, with plans to visit nine locations across central Virginia over the next 3 years.
