Victoria to test e-voting

Australian IT: Victoria may become the first Australian state to use electronic voting, with the Victorian Electoral Commission looking into using electronic systems for the 2006 state election.

Electronic voting systems would be used at six voting "super centers" which would provide polling facilities for the disabled and non-English speakers for the November 2006 poll, the Electoral Commission said in a call for proposals to study the feasibility of electronic voting.

"It is intended that introducing computer voting on this scale would also build voter confidence in electronic voting systems, which would be useful should it become more practicable or desirable to expand the offering of computer kiosk voting in the future," the request for proposals says.
