Verizon, library system bridging language gap in Central Kentucky

June 25, 2002

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Information developer Verizon Information Services and the Lexington Public Library Foundation have joined forces on a project to provide advocacy services to Central Kentucky's Spanish-speaking population.

The library, with the assistance of a $50,000 grant from Verizon Information Services -- a division of communications services provider Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ) -- will launch an electronic kiosk, called Leo, at a Wal-Mart Super Center in Lexington.

Leo is designed as a Spanish-English e-Branch for the library and will offer library information and an online catalog. In addition, the kiosk will feature health and community information, access to the Internet, Spanish and other foreign language newspapers, and employment opportunities.

The kiosk will be installed sometime this summer. Library officials said the kiosk has the potential to reach 40,000 weekly shoppers at its Wal-Mart location.
