ePaynews: Less than 10 million RFID-based contactless cards to date have been dispensed by U.S. issuers, but in 2006, a greater number of issuers and merchants intend to support contactless payments. MasterCard reported in December 2005 that it had more than 25,000 RFID-enabled merchant venues, while Visa revealed in February 2006 that more than 20,000 of its merchant locations were RFID-ready. Major U.S. issuers such as Bank of America, American Express, HSBC and Citizens Bank are driving contactless payment use, on the basis that the convenience will increase their revenues.
