University library installs a helping hand at checkout line

March 23, 2004

Meet COBY, a new service at the library of the University of California at Sacramento that will get students on their way home faster.

COBY, or Check Out Books Yourself, is a kiosk that requires users' university cards and personal identification numbers for the checkout process.

According to a university press release, the name COBY came from one of the 206 students who submitted names in a library contest. Child development student Terri Stove won for "COBY" and received a $50 gift certificate to the bookstore. Five honorable mentions went to students for their suggestions of Otto, Scott or Scot, Alice, E-go, and Hal.

Library officials hope the campus utilizes COBY. "It's fun. It's easy. It's convenient," said access service librarian Rhonda Rios Kravitz.
