United phasing out paper tickets

July 29, 2002

CHICAGO - In an effort to cut expenses and improve passenger services, United Airlines (NYSE:UAL) on July 29 announced plans to phase out paper tickets in favor of electronic tickets by January of 2004.

The airline, which has introduced technological developments such as electronic tickets and self-service check-in kiosks in recent years, will cease issuing paper tickets within the United States by next July and will issue electronic tickets only on both domestic and international flights by the start of 2004.

"We want our customers to have a simple, hassle-free experience at the airport," Pete McDonald, United senior vice president, airport operations, said in a news release.

Starting Aug. 1, United will charge an additional $20 for all paper tickets issued for flights where electronic tickets are available.

United's EasyCheck-in kiosk program has been deployed at airports in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Diego, San Francisco, and Salt Lake City.
