Touchscreen check-in kiosks improve ER efficiency

The (Cleveland, Ohio) Plain Dealer: Navater Brown expected to wait hours to see a doctor when she showed up recently at a Newark, N.J., hospital emergency room with a cut on her leg. But instead of signing in and waiting to explain her symptoms, Brown was escorted immediately to one of three check-in kiosks in Newark Beth Israel Medical Center's emergency department. The kiosk enabled her to enter her name, birth date, sex and ZIP code on a touchscreen. Brown then was directed to key in the reason for her visit, leading her to select "pain" from a menu of descriptive phrases or terms. Next, she pointed out the problem area, her leg, on an outline of the body — there is one for men, one for women — that popped up on the screen. With a single touch, Brown's information was relayed immediately to the emergency department's main computer, where a nurse reviewed it.
