Texas licensing kiosk program to expand

April 21, 2002

HOUSTON -- The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), expanding a program launched in late 2000, has ordered nearly 200 drivers license-testing stations.

The department has ordered 189 stations from Houston-based kiosk and industrial manufacturer CNC Industries Inc. The company, which has built similar units for licensing bureaus in Oregon and Illinois, produced 127 units for the DPS last year.

The kiosks administer driver's tests in both English and Spanish using a headset and a touchscreen monitor. During 2001, the Texas Driver License Division administered 2,303,045 such tests, according to CNC, but the company did not say how many of those tests were conducted using kiosks.

CNC partners Q-Test Technologies and X-Net provide software and hardware, respectively, for the project.
