ePaynews: Chip and PIN card technology is to be added to self-checkouts at Tesco, the U.K. grocery chain, for extra security given that neither a signature nor a PIN is currently required for transactions. Tesco has advised that every card transaction is referred to the issuer for authorization, and that self-service transaction amounts are limited to a specific total before a signature is required. Just recently, however, the U.K. anti-fraud group Card Watch warned that self-checkouts represent a fraud risk and that stores operating these machines are liable for any fraudulent transactions that occur.
