Will Kelly, a technology writer, has authored a guide for setting up kiosk mode on iPad and other operating systems on techtarget.com.

To set up kiosk mode for iPad, IT can use the Single App Mode or Guided Access feature.

Noting that tablets are taking on the role of self-service kiosks, Kelly cited the following seven best practices for managing multiple kiosks in an organization.

  1. Centralize kiosk management using mobile device management platforms, such as Kandji or JamfPro. Such a platform can remotely monitor kiosks the same way they manage employee devices. Kiosks will still need usage tracking and software updates.
  2. Document and standardize kiosk management. Management practices in a central location such as a service desk can include software installation, kiosk backup and recovery, software updates and physical security.
  3. Automate mobile device management. Automation can manage repetitive tasks across kiosks like app updates, device backup and device lifecycle management.
  4. Monitor kiosks using MDM. Monitoring will quickly identify and resolve issues and ensure the kiosks are available to customers or visitors.
  5. Employ device and software security. This includes firewalls and other measures to protect against unauthorized access and protect data.
  6. Deploy physical device security. Floor stands for tablet kiosks are available.
  7. Provide documentation and employee training. Managers in retail environments should be trained to troubleshoot kiosks as IT support is not always available.

The article also includes instructions on setting up kiosk mode for iPad and for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
