Symwave, XONA Media intro DVD/digital download hybrid kiosk with advanced USB technology

December 20, 2009

Symwave, a supplier of system solutions for next-generation USB devices, and XONA Media, a technology and service provider for entertainment kiosks, today introduced "Instant Movie Download" ("XIMD") technology. According to a news release from the companies, the XIMD technology enables consumers to download DVD-quality movies to portable devices in less than 10 seconds.

The companies have developed the MK3 DVD+Digital kiosk, which they say supports downloads to universally available USB 3.0 flash drives or to USB 3.0-enabled devices. In addition to digital download, the kiosk supports the vending of physical DVD and Blu-ray discs.

Pete Popcke, COO of XONA Media, says the company designed the solution to be flexible as consumers and retailers continue to understand digital technology.
"We developed the MK3 Kiosk to be the most flexible distribution platform for both today's and tomorrow's markets," he said. "A key design goal was to protect our operator and retailer customers in the coming digital transformation, with a digital download time at retail locations up to 1,000 times faster than downloading a movie at home. The performance, security and maturity of Symwave's USB 3.0 technology was a perfect companion to the MK3 design targets. The 10 second movie download sets a new standard at a wide variety of retail locations including grocery and convenience stores, restaurants, travel depots, and consumer electronics and big box discount retailers."
Symwave and XONA Media will demonstrate the MK3 kiosk with XIMD technology at next month's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
