Symbol Technologies rolls out MK2000 micro-kiosk

January 12, 2003

HOLTSVILLE, N.Y. -- Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: SBL), an enterprise mobility solutions provider, has introduced the Symbol MK2000 micro-kiosk at the National Retail Federation Expos, under way this week in New York City. The event runs until Jan. 15, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.

According to a release, Symbol MK2000 can display interactive, full-color video and audio messages via a compact, pedestal- or wall-mounted information station. It utilizes an icon-based 6.4-inch full-color display, integrated bar code scanner, 400 MHz processor, Microsoft CE.NET operating system, stereo speakers and optional touchscreen. Its ergonomic design is less than four inches deep.

"The Symbol MK2000's inherent computing intelligence and intuitive interface let shoppers access price, product and promotional information independent of store employees, freeing the store staff to provide personalized service to individual customers," said Bob Sanders, vice president and general manager of scanning at Symbol Technologies. "Using the MK2000's dynamic video and audio capabilities, retailers can offer shoppers guided sales assistance, special offers and information on item availability."

The Symbol MK2000 is ideal for retail customer service applications. With instantaneous access to the store mainframe, it can check on inventory status of items and allow shoppers to place orders for out-of-stock items. An optional magnetic-stripe reader also can facilitate customer loyalty-card programs.

For manufacturing, hospitality and healthcare applications, the Symbol MK2000 offers an innovative and cost-effective way to manage staff through time- and attendance-keeping. The MK2000's robust video and audio capabilities make it a useful tool for presenting training programs and giving employees direct access to company messages.
