Symbol, AccessVia team up for efficiency

February 17, 2002

NEW YORK - In a convergence of hardware and software manufacturers, Symbol Technologies Inc.(NYSE:SBL) and AccessVia have disclosed plans to develop new kiosk and wireless handheld solutions for multi-channel retailers. The announcement was made on Jan. 14 at the National Retail Federation's (NRF) annual show in New York.

The new products will integrate AccessVia's kiosk and commerce solutions software products with Symbol's wireless infrastructure and device management architecture.

Officials from both companies anticipate the products will improve customer service and employee efficiencies.

"Retailers are continually looking for ways to improve customer service and enhance the customer experience," Steve Mathers, Symbol vice president of marketing, said in a news release. "AccessVia has developed solutions using the most advanced mobile and wireless technologies from Symbol."

In other news from the NRF show, Symbol announced the launch of its Mobius wireless local area networking (WLAN) architecture. Company officials said the new architecture would deliver high-performance 802.11 WLAN communications while complementing other 802.11 wireless products. Symbol's WLAN strategy includes developing two sound networks -- one for point-of-sale and supply chain management applications, and another for interactive kiosk applications.
