Survey says: KIS designs mall research kiosks

January 30, 2004

BROOMFIELD, Colo. - Consumers in seven major American cities will be able to speak their minds on various products courtesy of a new project developed by Kiosk Information Systems Inc. (KIS) and market research company MindSearch.

Under the deal, announced on Jan. 30, KIS is designing and manufacturing interactive kiosks that will conduct polls and collect research on consumer preferences. The kiosks are located at shopping malls in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia, and St. Louis. The project will be expanded to up to eight additional sites by this summer. The two companies did not disclose what the units cost.

The mall concept enables KIS and MindSearch to combine an electronic kiosk with traditional bricks-and-mortar manned retail kiosks prevalent in malls. The kiosks features a pair of booths containing two interactive kiosks apiece. Consumers can fill out surveys at the kiosks using a touchscreen monitor.

The kiosks are separated by a manned booth. The booth contains a computer monitor that downloads surveys and offers coupons. The booth is staffed during regular mall hours and the attendant can offer information on the kiosks and assist consumers.

"This project required us to configure a design that would persuade mall shoppers to approach the four-station kiosk system and complete an interactive poll," Rick Malone, KIS president, said in a news release. "The completed unit is physically appealing and also offers privacy and ease of use to survey participants."
