LAS VEGAS - Telecommunications firm Sprint(NYSE:FON, PCS) is preparing to launch what it calls the third generation in analog cellular technology. To get the word out, Sprint is turning to another technological advancement: kiosks.
Sprint will showcase its new cellular technology - called 3G (third generation) - starting at the Consumer Electronics Show, which runs from Jan. 8-11 in Las Vegas. The company's 53-foot mobile showcase will feature interactive kiosks, devices, and live demonstrations of its new projects.
The new technology, working at peak speeds of 144 kbps, will provide users with a faster way of access information from wireless applications, according to Sprint. New services will also be available through the technology, including custom graphics, personal screen savers, audio clips, and e-mail services.
"In addition to making crystal clear calls, businesses and consumer will be able to use 3G to get faster and better services," Spring PCS president Charles Levine said in a news release, "everything from messaging to digital imaging, streaming video, and games."
The mobile exhibit will hit the road following the Consumer Electronics Show. The exhibit will appear in Salt Lake City in February, then move on to visit about 35 cities during the course of the year.
