SMS operator unveils m-commerce service

May 28, 2003

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- Macro Kiosk Sdn Bhd's CEO Kenny Goh is confident of making an impact in the mobile-commerce business through the operator's eTracker global mobile communications network, according to a report in the Star Online.

Goh said the global mobile-communications market is recording tremendous annual growth, and that his company wants to play a part by bringing users a new platform for conducting m-commerce.

"The eTracker platform can facilitate monetary transactions across 364 telcos over 115 countries," he said.

Macro Kiosk is one of the eight companies to be awarded a short messaging service (SMS) license by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission. The company's SMS gateway has a network of 30 nodes privately connected to 95 major SMS centers, the article said.

Goh said the new service would enable Malaysian mobile phone users to conduct banking transactions with local banks through SMS when they are abroad.

"They can even access bank accounts in Malaysia via a mobile phone that has been registered with a foreign telco," he said.

He said the platform allows mobile phone users to make payment for goods and services through their handsets.

The Asia-Pacific region is the company's main focus before it expanded its business into other parts of the world, the article said.

Goh said mobile users will need to upgrade their existing SIM cards or handsets to use the service.
