Shatterproof touchscreen for in-flight apps

May 21, 2003

BALTIMORE -- Touch International has announced a shatterproof, self-extinguishing touchscreen designed for implementation inside in-flight entertainment systems.

The 14-layer touchscreen meets both Federal Aviation Administration regulations and the requirements of entertainment applications, according to a news release. This is the first in a family of touchscreens that the company is introducing for a range of aerospace applications. Technology partners were not announced.

According to the release, the new touchscreen passed the torch test, self-extinguishing a 1,200-degree fire within seconds. The touchscreen also proved in testing that it will not shatter on impact. These tests ensure that the touchscreen will not endanger passengers in the event of an accident.

The products feature a specially designed viewing angle that allows users to view material  privately. This is a key feature of in-flight entertainment systems with new offerings including Internet access, movies and video games within individual passenger seats.

A built-in electromagnetic shield ensures the operation of the entertainment system does not interfere with the airplane's radio communications and electronics infrastructure.
