Self-service car wash tests chip-and-PIN payment

January 4, 2007

BRISTOL, England — CreditCall's Apollo Chip and PIN payment module is currently undergoing a rigorous trial inside a self-service carwash at an unattended car wash center on the north Wales coast. The terminal, manufactured by UK-based PSD-Codax, enables drivers to pay using their chip-and-PIN credit or debit card from the comfort of their car before driving into the automated carwash.

"Having decided on the card reader and PIN pad for the project, we needed a means of authorizing and processing the transactions, and it had to be wireless," said PSD managing director Graham Round. "The Apollo interfaces directly with our controller, the PIN pad and GPRS modem, and CreditCall process the transactions to the bank. Our clients, operators of car wash centers and petrol stations, are even able to see the transactions immediately using CreditCall's Web-based management system. This new facility will provide ‘pay-in-your-car' at service stations and eliminate the need for staff to handle payments at car wash centers."
