Seiko adds Bluetooth to thermal printers

November 3, 2003

TORRANCE, Calif. -- Seiko Instruments USA Inc., Micro Printer Division, now offers the WhiteTiger MPU-L465 thermal printer with embedded Class2 Bluetooth wireless communications capabilities.

The 300-dpi thermal printer is ideal for mobile applications in warehousing, inventory control, production control, and field sales and service, as well as medical and healthcare, retail, and test and measurement environments where wireless connectivity between a host computer or handheld device and a portable printer is a plus.

According to a news release, the WhiteTiger MPU-L465 generates crisp, clear bar code labels as well as a range text and graphics on standard paper stock.

Resident firmware supports a full range of character sets and fonts, error indications, and bar code formats that are printable horizontally or vertically. Software drivers are included for Windows 2000 and Windows XP, along with a CE.NET library.

Template software enables users to design label formats. In addition, a software tool is included for managing the printer's firmware-based switches to control functions such as serial and Bluetooth baud rates; print density, speed and width; label sensor; and power-off timing.

"Like the rest of the thermal printer lines from Seiko Instruments, the WhiteTiger MPU-L465 delivers the highest print quality available with a new twist: the ability to receive data from a standard Class2 Bluetooth radio 10 meters away," said Bob Falco, director and division manager, Seiko Instruments USA Inc., Micro Printer Division.

List prices for the WhiteTiger MPU-L465 thermal printers are under $1000, depending on options and accessories ordered, the release said.
