Santa Barbara waterfront to install parking kiosks

Santa Barbara, California, may soon replace older manned kiosk with automated parking kiosks.

Santa Barbara, California, may soon replace older manned kiosk with automated parking kiosks. The city's Historic Landmarks Commission plans to tear down four of the manned kiosks, and will decide whether to deploy seven additional parking kiosks by June 30, 2016, according to a report by Noozhawk.

"It makes it easier for people to get their parking permits," said Brian Bosse, waterfront business manager for Santa Barbara. "It's more convenient." Bosse also believes the kiosks will help reduce confusion, as the moving arm is always up at lots, which many travelers believe is an indication that parking is free.

The kiosk will allow users to choose a parking spot, say how long they will be there, and then pay to receive a ticket to display on their dash. The waterfront has already installed a few self-service kiosks, and Boss said those have allowed attendants to focus more on customer service than "unfolding dollar bills."

The kiosks would cost $11,000 each, but Bosse claimed the systems will "cover their cost pretty quickly."
