A San Diego newspaper has slammed the city for its plans to install digital kiosks downtown that carry advertising. The editorial in the Times of San Diego claims the kiosks will transform the downtown into a visually blighted area.
The city council will vote on a 10-year contract for up to 75 digital advertising kiosks that will bring $600,000 per year in revenue.
The editorial noted that the city was the first to take a case to the U.S. Supreme Court to establish the authority to limit outdoor advertising in 1983, and also froze the number of billboards at the time.
The port commissioners rejected a similar proposal in 2018 by the same vendor, IKE Smart City.
