Interactive digital kiosks moved a step closer to installation in downtown San Diego when the proposal was approved unanimously by the city council's economic development committee, according to a report in The San Diego Union-Tribune.
Raul Campillo, chairman of the committee, said the projected revenues of $14.7 million over 10 years from the 50 kiosks would outweigh the legal risks of amending the city's sign ordinance needed to allow the kiosks.
The kiosks are expected to provide more than $7 million for the Downtown San Diego Partnership, which would maintain the kiosks along with IKE Smart Cities, the kiosk provider.
IKE would receive 55% of the ad revenue while the city and the nonprofit would split the balnance, 65% and 35%, respectively.
The kiosks would display public service content more than half of the time.
The full council will rule on the proposal this spring.
