San Antonio bike share program on a roll

March 16, 2011

San Antonio, Texas will begin deploying 14 bicycle-sharing kiosks March 28 throughout its downtown area. A total of 140 bikes will be available to rent, according to, KSAT Channel 12 Newsin San Antonio.

In order to rent a bike, people can check in at a kiosk, or visit San Antonio Bike Share's websiteand sign up for a membership. Memberships can run for a day, a week or a year.

"So you have that membership, and that membership allows you to utilize any of the bikes in 30-minute intervals," said J.D. Simpson, spokesperson for San Antonio Bike Share.

The bikes are ideal for running quick errands, but there is another group that San Antonio Bike Share hopes will take advantage of the program.

"As a tourist, there's a thing called a 'day pass,' and with that they can go up to any kiosk and purchase a day pass," Simpson said.

Many of the kiosks are placed in areas where tourist frequent, including the Convention Center, Hemisphere Park, and Alamo Plaza. Anyone using a day pass will have unlimited use between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m.
