Reproductive rights advocates have cited the importance of vending machines in giving college students access to contraceptives. Sylvia Ghazarian, executive director of the Women's Reproductive Rights Assistance Project and Paxton Smith, a University of Texas student, coauthored an article, "Vending machines play vital role in empowering students' reproductive choices" that ran in the Las Vegas Sun on Sunday.
The article notes that vending machines play an important role as states have enacted restrictions on abortions.
Vending machines foster a culture of empowerment and destigmatization for contraceptives, the authors claim.
There are now 39 universities across 17 states with emergency contraception vending, with 20 more considering it, article stated.
