Redbox using altered cover art to circumvent copyright issues on embargoed titles

December 22, 2009

DVD-rental kiosk mainstay redbox is using substituted, altered digital cover art to market embargoed titles in its more than 22,000 locations, according to Home Media Magazine.

Analyst Richard Greenfield told Home Media he'd found "significantly altered cover art" for films from Fox, Warner Bros. and Universal available at redbox kiosks.Copyright issues currently prohibit redboxfrom using the titles' actual box art, after the three studios embargoed the DVD-rental brand from new releases until at least 28 days after they come out. Redbox is involved in antitrust litigation with the studios.
