Reassignment looms for Scottish police kiosk

July 10, 2002

INVERNESS, Scotland -- Scottish police officials, admitting that police access kiosks are more effective in rural settings, plan to relocate a kiosk from the center of Inverness, Scotland, to a location outside the city.

Police officials told The Scotsmannewspaper that the Inverness location was a test of the kiosk's viability within an urban location. But the city is already adequately served by such services as closed-circuit television.

The Access and Refuge Kiosk, which includes a direct communications link to police officials along with emergency and tourism information, had only attracted four or five visitors since opening last year, police officials told The Scotsmannewspaper.

The kiosk cost $77,000 to operate since it was deployed, police officials said.
