MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - PMC-Sierra today announced its open-source network computing initiative, which will enable commercialization of low-power solutions for education, enterprise, self-service kiosks, retail displays, Internet cafes and advanced video-on-demand, according to a news release.
The open source NC solution, the PMC Xiao Hu, is a single-board solution that was co-developed with China's Tsinghua University, MIPS Technologies and ATI Technologies Inc. Compared to the traditional desktop PC approach, the combination of the PMC Xiao Hu board with Linux software and a MIPS-Powered processor reduces power usage by more than 90 percent and IT costs by about 70 percent, the release added.
