LAS VEGAS -- Sunnyvale, Calif.-based
Philips Components(NYSE: PHG) is claiming to be the exclusive supplier of an innovation in the consumer electronics industry: the only in-panel, system-board integrated touchscreen LCD modules. The touchscreens, Philips says, enable the world's smallest and lightest wireless Internet appliances.Philips' Net Display modules are designed to standardize the enabling architecture of Internet appliances, allowing companies to deliver the industry's slimmest and most lightweight kiosks, Web tablets, information displays and thin clients available, Philips claims. Volume shipments of the Net Display modules are expected to begin during the second half of 2001.
Rather than adding a separate board around the panel for the system IC components, Philips has integrated the components into the back of the display resulting in dramatically thinner and lighter systems.
Philips' Web Display Group, which developed the modules, announced alliances with technology leaders, including National Semiconductor, BSQUARE Corp. and Transmeta Corp. The company hopes these alliances will continue to demonstrate the division's commitment to investing in digital technologies that enable wireless connectivity and convergence.
