Pennsylvania furthers commitment to kiosks

June 20, 2002

PHILADELPHIA - The future of Pennsylvania is its youth, according to Governor Mark Schweiker, and the future of the state also includes kiosks.

Schweiker announced that more than $2 million in grants would be allocated to 14 "Stay Invent the Future" regional projects in the state on June 20. The program is designed to attract and keep young professionals in the state.

Among the grants is $117,334 in funding to the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance for the creation of information kiosks providing visual tours of southwestern Pennsylvania. The project is part of a business resource/regional showcase highlighting that part of the state.

This round of funding is part of a two-year, $12 million effort to prevent young professionals from leaving the state. Funding is provided by a group of state investment and technology groups.

"As young leaders, you cannot look at this commitment and conclude anything other than this - the New Pennsylvania means business," Schweiker said in a news release.

Pennsylvania officials have pursued various kiosk projects over the past year, delivering grants to Penn State University and the Pennsylvania Travel Council for student information and traffic information kiosks, respectively (See story: Pennsylvania -- Land of Kiosks).
