Miami International Airport has become the next transportation hub to expedite passport processing via automated kiosks. The airport has installed 36 kiosks in its north terminal that allows U.S. and Canadian citizens to clear customs without standard interaction with a Border Patrol agent.
According to an article on sun-sentinel.com, the kiosks are compatible with travelers flying on 13 airlines, including American, British Airways and Iberia. Eventually airport officials hope to make kiosks available to all international travelers.
The kiosk scans a traveler's passport, takes their photo and matches it to the photo in the passport. If the kiosk spots discrepancies, a traveler would be subject to inspection by federal agents, the article reported.
"If the kiosk approves your passport, it prints out a receipt showing you've been cleared, and you're on your way," said airport spokesman Greg Chin. "As our international operations continue to increase, there's clearly a need to streamline procedures for inbound U.S. and Canadian citizens."
