Panama becoming technology hub of Latin America

January 27, 2004

Panama is the new strategic location for Internet data-center and telecommunications companies in Latin America.

According to a news release, Panama is attracting attention because of a burgeoning technology industry in the area and the fact that it has the best submarine fiber-optic connection in Latin America.

Leading Internet companies and carriers are already leveraging the benefits using Panama as the gateway for the region, the release said. Future opportunities listed include Internet-access kiosks and online gaming.

Players like Global Crossing, MCI, Sky Online, new world communication, Cable & Wireless and Nautilus have decided to install network operation centers in Panama, taking advantage of the geographical location providing an abundant supply of submarine fiber optic communications circuit.

The country is wired on both coasts, which makes possible interconnection close to north and Latin America, Asia, Europe, Africa and the world over redundant routes, according to the release.
