Overall DVD rental numbers slip from 2009

April 19, 2010

The Digital Entertainment Group reports that DVD rentals dropped by 14 percent from last year. A report by McClatchy-Tribune newspapers cites two major factors in the slide: the closure of a large number of brick-and-mortar DVD rental stores and a large offloading of DVDs that occurred last year when electronics retailer Circuit City went out of business.

The report does note that sales and rentals of high-definition discs rose, and that nearly all of the increases came through sales via DVD kiosks and digital downloads.
