Online check-in surges at Northwest

February 27, 2002

MINNEAPOLIS - The numbers of passengers on Northwest Airlinesflights using the carrier's electronic check-in service have increased 20 percent since Aug. 1, according to a Northwest news release.

Northwest claims it is the only major carrier offering Internet check-in. Passengers have the ability to print their own boarding passes, change flights and/or seat assignments up to 24 hours in advance via the Internet. The airline said the system reduces the time its passengers must wait in line at airports.

The service is available at 41 American airports. Northwest said that prior to August 1, 13 percent of those eligible were using the system, and that the percentage has increased to 16 percent in October. It said that 750,000 online check-ins have occurred since the program was instituted.

The airline also said that 72 percent of its passengers are traveling using e-tickets. It continues to advise passengers to arrive at the airport two hours in advance of departure.
