NYC kiosks approved for historic zones

July 1, 2016

Recently, New York City has been replacing pay phones with Wi-Fi kiosks called LinkNYC, manufactured by CityBridge. Now, the Landmarks Preservation Commission has approved the installation of additional kiosks in historic districts, according to a report by New York Yimby.

Travelers can use the kiosks to charge their phone, make phone calls or look at maps. Some of the kiosks also have looping advertisements. Kiosks that offer advertisements are 114 by 11-inches wide and kiosks without ads are 123 by 11-inches wide.

Although the commission approved the kiosk deployment, it also proposed additional rules for historic districts. Any phone booth may be replaced, but any additional kiosks must be approved by the LPC. In addition, all kiosks must be at least 100 feet apart from each other.
