North Carolina courthouses are trading public computers for user-friendly kiosks, according to a CBS 17 report.

The eCourt kiosks offer a wider range of services, including searching court dates, filing documents electronically and making payments.

Previously, public computers only allowed viewing court records. Most other tasks required assistance from a clerk. The kiosks aim to improve efficiency for both the public and courthouse staff.

"This is just one more way and one more tool hopefully to assist people in handling their business, getting in front of a judge and getting the help that they need," Wake County District Court Judge Ashleigh Parker told the news outlet.

The kiosks are particularly beneficial for people who may not feel safe using computers at home, such as those involved in child protection cases or domestic violence situations. For attorneys, the kiosks offer a faster way to file documents electronically and reduce wait times.

The kiosks are being rolled out in stages, with around 20 already installed in pilot counties. Additionally, 27 counties using the eCourt's software system can access court records remotely.

While kiosks offer increased access and convenience, Judge Parker emphasized the continued importance of staff assistance: "Sometimes it can be simple...they need some forms and paperwork that they need to access and look at."
